French Bulldog vs Cavapoo vs Miniature Poodle: An Honest Side-by-Side
Three small dogs, three very different lives. How a French Bulldog, a Cavapoo and a Miniature Poodle compare on shedding, heat, exercise, grooming, cost of care and lifespan, from the people who raise all three.
We raise all three of these breeds, which puts us in an odd position: we have no reason to talk you into one over the others. What we do have is a clear view of where each one goes right and where it goes wrong in real homes. This is that view, laid out the way we explain it on the phone.
The short answer, if you want it first: a Miniature Poodle suits the widest range of homes, a Cavapoo is the easiest companion for most families, and a French Bulldog is the best apartment dog of the three as long as you can manage heat. Everything below is the detail behind that sentence.
The numbers, side by side
| French Bulldog | Cavapoo | Miniature Poodle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult weight | 16–28 lb | 8–25 lb (Toy 8–14, Mini 13–25) | 10–15 lb |
| Typical lifespan | 10–12 years | 12–15 years | 10–18 years |
| Shedding | Moderate, seasonal | Low (F1B lowest) | Very low |
| Daily exercise | 30–60 min, gentle | 30–60 min | 45–60 min, plus brain work |
| Professional grooming | Rarely | Every 6–8 weeks | Every 4–6 weeks |
| Heat tolerance | Poor | Good | Good |
| Barking | Quiet | Quiet to moderate | Can be vocal |
| Time alone (adult) | Copes well | 3–4 hours | About 4 hours |
Lifespans are the AKC's published ranges for the purebreds; the Cavapoo range is the one most vets quote for the cross.
Shedding and allergies
This is the question that decides more sales than any other, so it goes first. If anyone in the house has dog allergies, the order is Poodle, then F1B Cavapoo, then F1 Cavapoo. A French Bulldog is the wrong choice. Frenchies have a short coat that sheds twice a year in earnest and a little all the time.
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. The proteins people react to are in skin flakes and saliva as well as hair. A Poodle's coat helps because loose hair stays trapped in the curl until it is brushed out, instead of landing on your sofa. We go deeper on this in are Cavapoos hypoallergenic?, including why we always suggest an allergic buyer meets a puppy before committing.
Heat, breathing and where you live
A French Bulldog's short muzzle is the trade-off you accept with the breed. A Royal Veterinary College study found French Bulldogs had about six times the heatstroke risk of Labradors. That doesn't rule them out of Florida or Arizona, but it does mean air conditioning, early-morning walks and no long car rides in July. We wrote a whole post on French Bulldogs in hot states.
Cavapoos and Poodles have normal-length muzzles and cope with heat the way most small dogs do. If you live in the South and don't want to plan your summer around your dog, that difference matters more than coat or colour.
The breathing issue with Frenchies also has a buying dimension: ask for the parents' BOAS grades. Our BOAS guide explains the Cambridge grading and what a good result looks like.
Exercise and the shape of your day
All three are happy with 30–60 minutes of walking, but they spend their energy differently.
- French Bulldogs do short bursts. Two or three strolls and some floor play and they're done. They are not jogging partners.
- Cavapoos match your mood. They'll do a long weekend hike and be just as content with a lazy day, as long as you're in the room.
- Miniature Poodles need their brains worked. A Poodle that walks an hour but never has to think will invent its own entertainment, usually involving your shoes. Ten minutes of training a day changes everything.
Grooming: the cost people forget
A Frenchie costs almost nothing to groom: a weekly brush, nails, and cleaning the facial folds. Cavapoos and Poodles need a professional groom every four to eight weeks, which in most US cities runs $70–$120 a visit. Over a 15-year life, that's a real line in the budget. It's the main reason a Frenchie is cheaper to keep day to day, even though it's usually the most expensive to buy. The price guides break this down: French Bulldog, Cavapoo, Poodle.
Children, other pets and noise
All three are good family dogs. The differences are in the details:
- A Miniature Poodle or a Mini Cavapoo is sturdy enough for young children. Toy sizes are better with kids over six or so, because a fall from a toddler's arms can break a leg.
- French Bulldogs are tough little dogs and patient with children, but they overheat in rough play and should never be picked up by the front legs.
- For apartment neighbours, a Frenchie is the quietest. Poodles bark the most of the three, mostly to tell you about the hallway.
So which one?
- Allergies, or you want the longest life: a Miniature Poodle.
- First dog, busy family, someone usually home: a Cavapoo. Our Mini vs Toy Cavapoo post helps with size.
- Apartment, low exercise, you love the look and you have A/C: a French Bulldog.
If you're torn, tell us about your home and your week. We would rather match you to the right breed than sell you the one that's listed this month.
