Are Cavapoos hypoallergenic?

Short answer

No dog is truly hypoallergenic, Cavapoos included. Dog allergens come mainly from saliva and skin, not hair. Cavapoos shed less than most breeds, so less allergen ends up around the house, and F1B Cavapoos (about 75% Poodle) usually shed least. Many people with mild allergies cope well, but meet the puppy before you commit.

What 'hypoallergenic' actually means

The main dog allergen, Can f 1, is produced in saliva and skin glands. Research comparing homes with so-called hypoallergenic breeds and other breeds has found no consistent difference in airborne allergen levels. What a low-shedding coat does do is hold loose hair and dander until it is brushed out, rather than spreading it around the house.

How to choose a Cavapoo if you have allergies

  1. Choose an F1B or a multigeneration Cavapoo with a curly coat.
  2. Spend an hour with the puppy, or an adult from the same parents, before reserving.
  3. Keep the dog out of the bedroom and wash bedding weekly.
  4. Groom regularly — a matted coat traps dander against the skin.
  5. Talk to an allergist if your allergy is more than mild.

Common questions

Do Cavapoos shed?
A little. Most Cavapoos are low-shedding, F1Bs especially, but shedding varies with each puppy's coat type.
Which dog is best for allergies, a Cavapoo or a Poodle?
A Poodle, because its low-shedding coat is consistent. A Cavapoo's coat depends on which genes it inherits.
