F1 vs F1B Cavapoo: what's the difference?
Short answer
An F1 Cavapoo is a first-generation cross — one Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent and one Poodle parent, so roughly 50% of each. An F1B is an F1 Cavapoo bred back to a Poodle, making it about 75% Poodle. F1Bs usually have curlier, lower-shedding coats; F1s vary more, even within one litter.

Cavapoo generations explained
| Generation | Parents | Approx. Poodle share | Coat |
|---|---|---|---|
| F1 | Cavalier × Poodle | 50% | Wavy to curly; shedding varies from low to moderate |
| F1B | F1 Cavapoo × Poodle | 75% | Usually curly; the most reliably low-shedding |
| F2 | F1 Cavapoo × F1 Cavapoo | 50% | The least predictable; coat ranges from flat to curly |
| Multigen | Cavapoo × Cavapoo over several generations | Varies | More consistent if the breeder selects for coat |
Which generation should you choose?
- For allergies or minimal shedding: F1B.
- For the most Cavalier-like temperament and look: F1.
- For predictability in general: avoid F2 unless the breeder can show you the coats of previous F2 litters.
Generation is listed on every Cavapoo we offer. If a breeder can't tell you a puppy's generation, they likely can't tell you the parents' health results either.
Common questions
- Do F1B Cavapoos shed?
- Very little, usually. With about 75% Poodle ancestry most F1Bs inherit the curly, low-shedding coat — though no dog is completely shed-free.
- Is an F1 or F1B Cavapoo healthier?
- Neither generation is inherently healthier. Health depends on whether the specific parents were tested — above all the Cavalier parent's heart.
