How much does a French Bulldog cost?
Short answer
A French Bulldog puppy from a health-testing breeder usually costs $3,500–$8,000 in the US. Standard fawn, brindle and cream sit at the lower end; rare colours such as lilac and merle, and fluffy coats, can pass $10,000. Budget a further $1,800–$3,000 a year, plus a realistic chance of airway surgery.

Why French Bulldogs cost more than most breeds
French Bulldogs rarely breed or give birth naturally. Most litters are conceived by artificial insemination and delivered by caesarean section, and litters average only three or four puppies. Those vet costs, plus breathing (BOAS), spine and heart testing of both parents, set the floor on a responsible breeder's price.
Price by colour and coat
| Type | Typical price range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fawn, brindle, cream, pied | $3,500–$5,500 | Colours accepted by the AKC breed standard. |
| Blue, chocolate, lilac, isabella | $5,000–$8,000 | Diluted colours; demand-driven pricing. |
| Merle | $6,000–$10,000+ | Merle-to-merle breedings carry serious health risks; ask how the litter was bred. |
| Fluffy (long coat) | $8,000–$15,000+ | A recessive long-hair gene; not accepted by the AKC standard. |
Colour does not change health or temperament. A breeder who charges more for colour but cannot show you breathing and spine results has the priorities backwards.
The yearly cost of a French Bulldog
- Pet insurance: $90–$160 a month — among the highest of any breed.
- Food, skin-fold care and allergy management: $500–$900 a year.
- Around 1 in 4 French Bulldogs need soft-palate or nostril surgery, typically $2,000–$5,500.
Common questions
- Why are fluffy French Bulldogs so expensive?
- The long coat comes from a recessive gene both parents must carry, so fluffy puppies are rare. The price is set by scarcity, not by any health benefit.
- Is a $1,500 French Bulldog a scam?
- Very often. Few responsible breeders can cover artificial insemination, a caesarean birth and parent health testing at that price. Insist on a live video call with the puppy and its mother before paying anything.
- Is pet insurance worth it for a French Bulldog?
- For this breed, usually yes. Airway, spine, skin and eye problems are common and expensive, and insurers exclude anything diagnosed before the policy starts — so insure from the first day.
