What is a fluffy French Bulldog?
Short answer
A fluffy French Bulldog is a Frenchie with a longer, softer coat caused by a recessive long-hair gene (LH, the FGF5 gene). A puppy needs a copy from both parents to be fluffy. Apart from the coat they are ordinary French Bulldogs — same size, temperament and health risks — but they are rarer, so they cost more.

Fluffy vs standard French Bulldog
| Standard Frenchie | Fluffy Frenchie | |
|---|---|---|
| Coat | Short, smooth | Medium length, soft, feathered ears |
| Genetics | No long-hair requirement | Two copies of the recessive long-hair (LH) gene |
| Size and build | Same | Same |
| Breathing and health risks | Same | Same |
| AKC standard | Accepted | Not accepted (the standard calls for a short coat) |
| Grooming | Weekly brush | Brushing several times a week |
Are fluffy French Bulldogs healthy?
The long-hair gene itself is not linked to disease. What matters is the same as for any Frenchie: the parents' BOAS grades, spine and heart results, and a DNA panel. A breeder selling on coat alone, without those results, is selling the wrong thing.
Common questions
- Do fluffy French Bulldogs shed more?
- They shed a similar amount but the hairs are longer and more visible, and the coat needs brushing several times a week to avoid tangles.
- Can two standard French Bulldogs have a fluffy puppy?
- Yes, if both parents carry one copy of the long-hair gene. A DNA test on the parents shows whether they are carriers.
