Is a French Bulldog right for you?
Small, funny, and far more delicate than the internet admits. Before you reserve Ezra, here is what living with a French Bulldog actually takes.
Ezra’s parents were tested for
- OFA cardiac
- OFA patella
- OFA spine
- Embark DNA panel
- BOAS grading
Results come from the testing body, not from us, and are in Ezra’s information pack.
The honest list
- Breathing
- Frenchies are brachycephalic. Our parents are BOAS-graded and our puppies have open nares, but this will never be a running partner.
- Heat
- They cannot regulate temperature. Above 24°C they need shade, water and air conditioning. Heatstroke kills this breed every summer.
- Flying
- A Frenchie must never fly cargo — the breed is banned from it for good reason. Ours travel by road or in the cabin with a flight nanny, and the same rule applies if you relocate later.
- Water
- They cannot swim — the build sinks them. An unfenced pool is a fatal hazard.
- Lifetime cost
- Budget $1,800–$3,000 a year. Insurance runs $90–$160 a month and pre-existing conditions are excluded.
- Surgery odds
- Around 1 in 4 need soft-palate or nares surgery ($2,000–$5,500). Allergies and skin-fold care are near-universal.
French Bulldog questions, answered
How much does a French Bulldog puppy cost?
Our French Bulldog puppies currently range from $4,400 to $7,175 across the 25 listed right now; each puppy's price depends on colour, coat, size and sex. The fee always includes the full vet exam, vaccinations to date, deworming, microchip registration and our written health guarantees, and that nothing is added afterwards. Budget $1,800-$3,000 a year after purchase. Pet insurance for the breed runs $90-$160 a month, and around 1 in 4 French Bulldogs need soft-palate or nares surgery costing $2,000-$5,500.
How big does a French Bulldog get?
Most adult French Bulldogs weigh 16-28 lb and stand 11-13 inches at the shoulder. Fluffy-coat Frenchies are the same size as smooth-coat ones; the coat is the only difference.
Do French Bulldogs shed? Are they hypoallergenic?
French Bulldogs shed moderately, more in spring and autumn, and are not suitable for most people with dog allergies. A weekly brush keeps it manageable.
Are French Bulldogs good with kids?
Usually, yes. French Bulldogs are sturdy, affectionate and happy with short walks, which suits family life. Supervise them with young children: they overheat quickly in rough play, and should never be lifted by the front legs.
Are French Bulldogs easy to potty train?
Moderately. They are clever but can be stubborn, and a puppy's bladder is small. A fixed routine - out after every meal, nap and play session - crate training and praise get most Frenchies reliable by 4-6 months.
