Toy vs Miniature Poodle: what's the difference?
Short answer
Size is the difference. Under the AKC standard a Toy Poodle stands 10 inches or less at the shoulder and usually weighs 4–6 lb; a Miniature stands over 10 and up to 15 inches and usually weighs 10–15 lb. Both have the same intelligence and coat, but Miniatures are sturdier around children.

Common questions
- Is a Toy Poodle the same as a teacup Poodle?
- No. 'Teacup' is a marketing term, not a recognised size. Breeding for extremely small size raises the risk of low blood sugar, fragile bones and liver problems — treat it as a red flag.
- Do Toy and Miniature Poodles have the same temperament?
- Largely, yes. Both are intelligent, alert and eager to learn. Toys can be more sensitive and more prone to barking if under-exercised mentally.
